"A Poet' - Defies Definition ?

A poet is...

a passive painter of words
plush with passionate beliefs;

a traveler in a trance-like state
disconnected yet empathetic;

a sensitive soul, doubtless,
yet doesn't bother blending;

a stranger who defies definition
yet spends a lifetime seeking one!

A like your stranger-poet idea, that's true and clever, but I do not think a poet is a "passive painter".

sintha,
A point I pondered over quite a while... it's only his painting that's passive the ideas/belief they present are not...

I think you defined a poet, very well.
When a person writes a poem, they write it the way they see it, the way they feel it.
Painter of words, traveler in a trance-like state, sensitive, stranger.

Of all the poems you have written I think this is one of my favorites.

I don't think I would change a thing. Well Done!

Poet is an active painter of words. No?

shirazi,
Your comment and sintha's made me reconsider the use of 'passive' to describe my poet 'painter', but obdurate as this may sound, I still believe that in order for a poet to create his pacifist use of words is vital for him to be able to convey his powerful emotions/ ideas. Aggression in language can often be a deterrent to effective 'reaching out' you'd agree....

Passive words just can't change lives as some of the poets do with their words.

And yes, you are welcome to share the video at Light Within with your audience in class as well as here. I am so glad you liked that. Thanks for stopping by.

And you know, you have me as a reader at this interesting blog.

dear id, i love your poem/poet definition
for me, a poet is you
thank you for sharing your lovely words

shirazi,
do you really believe it's the power of words that change people's thinking or does the power lie in the idea/thought that those words convey?
Glad to have you visit :)

Bonjour Id,

Hope you don't mind but I cannot agree with any of those definitions.

To me poetry is something like shorthand. Some people thus can say in some lines where others need ten pages or a whole book.

Next, a poem - a good one - is beautiful to look at, to read silently or aloud. Kind of sculpture or a painting of words.

a poet is simply god...
or god is a poet?

I liked this, I think the problem is that the poet is a poet, that s all.

if a poet is this, then i am a passionate, disconnected stranger with trance-like beliefs, doubtlessly defying sensitive travelers with painted words of lifetime beliefs.

thank you~t~
